This month, we have chosen Scottish National Party MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, to be the next to feature in our new ‘MP of the month’ series.
Lisa has been the Member of Parliament for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow since May 2015. We interviewed Lisa to find out a bit about her and why she became interested in animal welfare.
What did you do before being elected in May?
I worked as a clinical psychologist in NHS mental health and learning disability for twenty years prior to being elected in May.
How did you become interested in issues surrounding animal protection?
I have always been interested in animal welfare, been a pet owner since my own childhood and felt strongly about animal cruelty issues. Animal welfare is also a crucial issue to my constituents so I am in good company!
Do you share your home with any animals?
We currently have a French Bulldog Rossie and two dwarf rabbits Misty and Winter who share our home. Our pets were rescued from the local SPCA. Pets help teach children compassion and responsibility and have been shown to enhance psychological wellbeing.
If you had one message to Government on animal experiments what would it be?
I would urge the government to ensure that alternative scientific methods are vigorously researched, pursued and brought forward and look forward to the day when animal experimentation no longer occurs.
