A shocking number of monkeys were exported from Mauritius in 2015
Will the Prime Minister end the cruel trade in Mauritius monkeys once and for all?
Cruelty Free International has written to the Mauritian Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, to express our disappointment at the shocking number of monkeys who continue to be exported from Mauritius for experiments.
Last year 7,762 monkeys were exported to the USA, Canada and Europe (the UK, France, Spain and Germany). We believe this is 7,762 monkeys too many.
Mauritius is one of the world’s largest suppliers of monkeys for the research industry. Our investigations have shown that sadly, many monkeys, including those captured from the wild, are held in farms across Mauritius. Denied the lush foliage of their jungle homes, these monkeys spend their lives behind bars on concrete and their offspring are exported overseas, in small wooden crates, as cargo on airlines such as Air France.

Claims that monkeys play an important role in finding cures for human diseases rarely translate to actual treatments due to species differences. Find out more about the failures of using monkeys in research.
Cruelty Free International questions why the Mauritius government continues to allow such a cruel trade that tarnishes its international reputation as a 'paradise island', especially among those seeking eco-friendly or 'green' destinations.
