Experts look at ending monkey experiments in Italy
We join politicians and scientists to review primate testing
Dr Jarrod Bailey, Senior Research Scientist at Cruelty Free International, will be discussing monkey experiments at a conference in Rome today. The one day event looks at the advance of new technologies to replace cruel monkey research. Participants including politicians, lawyers, academics, and our Italian partners Lega Anti Vivisezione will debate the political and legal hurdles to ending outdated primate testing in Italy.
Guest speakers include toxicology and microbiology specialist Professor Thomas Hartung and neuroscientist Dr Anna Price, a Scientific Officer at the European Commission Directorate of Health.
Dr Jarrod Bailey says: “It’s vital we keep the issue of unnecessary and ineffective animal experiments in the spotlight and encourage governments, regulators and the science sector to recognise the failure of primate research while embracing humane and human-relevant alternatives. We champion Italy’s efforts to further progress in eliminating the unnecessary suffering of monkeys in neurological experiments and others and hope that this conference helps towards achieving that goal.”
Dr Bailey is author of the paper ‘Non-human Primates in Neuroscience Research: The Case Against its Scientific Necessity’ published in science journal ATLA last year.
