Nevada State Senator Melanie Scheible is May’s Legislator of the Month
Senator receives our award for sponsoring the Nevada Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act
Nevada State Senator, Melanie Scheible, has been recognized as our Legislator of the Month for May 2019. Each month, we nominate a legislator or parliamentarian as Legislator of the Month to celebrate the work these individuals do for animals in laboratories.
This month, Nevada State Senator Schieble receives her award for her work in putting an end to cruel and unnecessary cosmetics testing on animals with her bill SB 197, the Nevada Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act, currently under consideration in the state legislature.
The Act, which has passed the state Senate and is now working its way through the Assembly aims to ban the sale in Nevada of any cosmetic product that has been tested on animals after January 2020. This would bring Nevada in line with California and a number of other countries that already prohibit the sale of animal-tested cosmetics that use new testing.
Senator Melanie Scheible said: “Compassion calls for eliminating testing on animals. Nevadans can be proud of a policy that requires cosmetics companies to phase out animal testing to continue doing business here.”
Senator Scheible has a long history of advocating for the protection of animals.
Monica Engebretson, the North America Campaign Manager for Cruelty Free International said: “I am so pleased to recognize my friend and former colleague Senator Melanie Scheible as our Legislator of the Month for her leadership in working to make Nevada the next cruelty free cosmetics zone. This bill is important not only for Nevada but for the entire US. History has shown that state activity leads to changes at the federal level. Senator Scheible’s bill is already helping pave the way for federal legislation and keeping the momentum going for a global ban.”
