Great news from the US this week as two states have made progress in replacing animal tests with humane alternatives.

State legislators we’ve been working with in Virginia and Vermont have introduced bills that would make it necessary for laboratories in the states to use modern non-animal methods ahead of animal testing for chemicals used in cosmetics or household products.

Monica Engebretson, US Campaign Manager for Cruelty Free International said: “We are delighted to see more US states step up and make a difference for animals. If successfully passed these new bills will ensure that animals are not harmed in outdated product tests in either Virginia or Vermont now or in the future.”

For over 50 years animals have been used in painful tests to assess the safety of chemicals used in cosmetics and household cleaners. But modern alternatives not using animals are now widely available and are faster and better at predicting human reactions.

Sadly there is no US law that requires that available non-animal tests be used in favour of cruel animal tests so we urge all states to step up. Virginia and Vermont could join California, New York and New Jersey in requiring the use of alternatives to animal experiments.
