I screamed out in distress as I was roughly strapped into a restraint device but nobody came to help me. My head was held firmly and the post that had been implanted into my skull, and caused me so much pain, was pulled upward and fixed to a rod above me. I couldn’t move. On the large screen in front of me a series of patterns began to flash up. I had learnt over many months of this trauma that if a pattern was repeated, I should quickly press the button in front of me and I would be rewarded with some fruit juice dribbling into my mouth. I wanted that juice. I hadn’t been allowed any fluids for many hours and I was very, very thirsty. After several hours I was released from the device and put back in the cage. I didn’t struggle this time. I wanted to sleep. To forget.

What are animal experiments?
An animal experiment is any scientific test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm.
They include:
- Injecting or force feeding animals with potentially harmful substances
- Surgically removing animals organs or tissues to cause damage
- Subjecting animals to frightening situations to create anxiety and depression
