I cowered at the back of my cage as a hand came in try to grab me but they were too strong and I was taken out of my cage. My head was pushed through a hole in a box which they closed. I couldn’t move. I looked around me - there were rows of us here. A man came up to me, my breathing increased and I moved my head to try and escape. I couldn’t. He pulled one of my eyelids open and dripped something into my eye. Instantly my vision became blurred. I felt this sharp, burning sensation as my vision began to disappear. I could hardly see. The substance kept burning in my eye. I wanted it to stop. I wanted to remove the substance but couldn’t. It caused me so much pain. I struggled in vain but couldn’t scratch my eye. Eventually they came back. They looked at my painful eye before returning me to my cold empty cage. I was alone, frightened and in pain. I hoped that they would not come back.

If animal experiments don’t work, why are scientists still using them?
The reasons why animal testing persists are often not scientific. Instead, it can be because the scientific establishment is resistant to change – it’s easier and more comfortable to simply do what has always been done. Much more funding and political support is given to animal research than humane scientific testing methods. Less than 0.04% of the UK science research budget is devoted to developing alternatives. But, growing numbers of eminent scientists are questioning animal experiments on both ethical and scientific grounds.
